Help with mobo combo

As many of you know I toasted my machine and don't have the means to rebuild. My brother-in-law however, has just called me and asked me to find a motherboard cpu combo and send him the link to it as he knows nothing about that kind of thing. I was wanting some input on what would be a good mobo combo that would get me playing the newer games (ie. CoD4, UT3, etc) and yet still be fairly easy on his pocket book. I believe he is wanting to get it for me for Christmas and as much as I would love to ask for something similar to what NrKissed let me run at the Mullet LAN, I am sure that is out of his price range. The biggest problem is I don't know what he is wanting to spend and to me it seems rude to ask. I figure if I can get a few ideas to throw at him I'll let him choose and be happy with what I get (seeing as how right now I am gaming not at all) thanks everyone.

Re: Help with mobo combo

I  found this and it seems like a decent one... but I may still be asking too much... I don't know if he quite understands what he is getting into.

Agreed, that should be a good setup.

Re: Help with mobo combo

Hey Nat,

Can you use the RAM you have now?  I thought you had a gig of DDR2 in the box now..Might make it easier to find a combo with just the CPU and Proc.  Also to confirm you have a PCI-express video card right?

I will have to look when I get a minute later today.

Re: Help with mobo combo

well yes I can use the ram I have now... it is a gig, but I've seen how taxing some of these games are and I figured if Jesse will go for it why not at least put one combo in there that provides me with the means to have 2 gigs instead of one. and yes my graphics card is pci-e though I will need to come up with a new one of those for the games... sadly I am still running an (sob) x700 pro ...

Re: Help with mobo combo

I see!  Just remember good DDR2 is really going cheap these days, (esp after rebate stuff).  So don't let that get to be a deal breaker.  i wonder if you could find a good video card pack in deal..

/me goes back to work before the system building bug takes over.

how do the pentium D's stack up? i was thinking about this in the interest of cost. Basically I was thinking that later when I have the dough I can upgrade to a better CPU since the board will allow for it.
